If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?
This is the outfit that lets me do everything I need to do, and look good doing it.
It starts at the feet. Footy socks, because they're long and suit my long legs. Then my Roll Club boots: engineer boots, handmade to the shape of my feet. They'll take me through the desert and onto the motorbike without a second thought.
Then my unbreakable Lelliott jeans. I designed the denim ten years ago. It's a tri-weave with Dyneema running through it, which makes it stronger than steel, weight for weight. I've worn this pair for seven years and they're still going strong.
They're white, of course. White is bright and interesting, and you can wash it and bleach it forever. It picks up life as you go, paint included.
Holding them up is a G-Star leather belt I bought in the 90s. Still going. I love 90s G-Star.
Underneath, Bonds. Singlet and boxers. Australian and functional. The singlet is the most underrated layer there is: warm when it's cold, cool when it's hot. Over it goes a vintage T-shirt I found at the Mill Market in Daylesford.
Then silk arm warmers. I've always struggled to find clothes that fit, so I either go bespoke or mix things up. The arm warmers keep me warm on the bike and give my arms the length most sleeves don't.
Next, a Helmut Lang slub cotton jacket from the 90s, with a nod to the mods. Over that, my sheepskin flying jacket. It's the most versatile thing I own. I bought it so I could wear just a T-shirt under it in winter. I work in the rain in it, ride in it, and at night I throw it over the bed. It beats any puffer going. An absolute staple.
Then an oversized bandana, this one from Pickings and Parry. A big bandana can be worn a dozen ways and gives you a dozen looks.
I often wear a big cowboy hat, but for life, it's a cap. In this case a John Deere cap, a nod to the tractor on the farm and to a great American brand. It stows on the bike, keeps my head warm and the sun off.
Then my Donahugh Daxton sunglasses in tortoiseshell. Donahugh is high value at a crazy affordable price. Go figure.
On my wrist, an Oris. Titanium, self-winding, water resistant to 100 metres. I've worn it every day since 2003 and had it serviced twice. It was bought with the same thinking as everything else: high value, built to last, made to be worn, not hidden away.
That's my outfit for life.
How does this collection of clothes allow you to move between the various aspects of your life?
Every piece earns its place in more than one world. The boots ride and walk the desert. The jeans take paint and still go into a meeting. The flying jacket works in the rain and doubles as a blanket at night. I don't change for the bike, the horse, the studio or the boardroom. I just go.
If money was no object, what is the ultimate version of this outfit?
Honestly, money's no object already. Bespoke isn't cheap, but you buy it once and live in it. If anything, I'd add a few knitted silk T-shirts and leggings as base layers. But I already get to wear exactly what I want. Arrogant? Yes.
What is the origin of this look for you?
It came together with an obsession to perfectly blend function and style. If I had to point to references: cowboy, western, sixties biker, mixed with workwear you can still wear into the boardroom.
How do you feel when you wear this?
Like me. Tall, slim, and ready to cross between worlds. The bike, the horse, the boardroom, the studio. The bath.
Imagine you were put in charge of designing a capsule wardrobe based around your style. What would it comprise?
It would be what I'm wearing, plus one more jacket. Then I'd bring in knitwear inspired by 70s punk. Slim cut, a little longer in the arm and the body, with a touch of drape. And boxing gloves - definitely boxing gloves.
List what you are wearing:
Footy socks, Roll Club by Brian the Bookmaker - LA - handmade engineer boots, White Lelliott jeans, Dyneema tri-weave denim, G-Star leather belt, 1990s, Bonds white singlet and red boxers, Vintage T-shirt, Mill Market, Daylesford, Silk arm warmers, Helmut Lang vintage slub cotton jacket, 1990s, mod-inspired, Sheepskin flying jacket, Oversized bandana, Pickings and Parry, John Deere cap, Donahugh Daxton tortoiseshell sunglasses, Filson camo wax cotton zip bag, Oris titanium automatic watch and Construction Yellow work gloves.
